Girona is a city that we love, so much so that we do not know if we like it better than Barcelona. That’s why it’s no wonder that they chose it as the setting for some places in the sixth season of Game of Thrones.
In this post we want to show you the locations filmed in Girona that we are recognizing as the episodes of the series as we are watching the show. If you have not seen the sixth season of the series, beware because THIS POST CONTAIN SPOILERS.
Braavos
In the first episode of the sixth season we can see that Arya Stark is asking for help on a street in Braavos. The real street is Carrer del Bisbe Josep Cartaña, very close to Girona’s Cathedral that we will appear a few episodes later.
In the fifth episode Girona appears again. On this occasion Arya Stark is in a square watching a play because they have ordered her to kill one of the actresses. The play takes place in the Plaça dels Jurats de Girona.
In the seventh episode Arya walks through the market in search of a boat ticket to leave Braavos. This market is located in Passeig Arqueològic.
In the eighth episode we see Arya again, and this implies that Girona comes out again in Game of Thrones. In this case, different parts of the old city center appear. We want to highlight the Arab Baths (Banys àrabs) where Arya goes when she is fleeing to avoid being killed and also the Pujada de Sant Domènech.

King’s Landing
It seems that Girona has replaced Dubrovnik as the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. In the sixth episode of this sixth season we can see Queen Margaery at the door of the Great Sept about to embark on the path of shame. The Great Sept is the Girona’s Cathedral and in the square of the cathedral is where Jaime Lannister and his army try to prevent Queen Margaery from making this way to the Red Fortress.
For the filming they had to cover the statues to avoid religious connotations and to not be able to associate it with any specific time. The buildings in front of the cathedral were covered with a chroma and it looks like Girona has sea.
Old town
In the last chapter of Game of Thrones Sam arrives in Old Town to become a master. The interior of the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, where the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia is located, is the entrance to the Citadel.

Other locations of Game of Thrones in Catalonia and Spain
Other locations this season have been recorded elsewhere in Catalonia and Spain. Here is a short summary of some of these locations:
- Tarly’s fortress: The family fortress of Sam, Jon Snow best friend, is the Castillo de Santa Florentina of Canet de mar.
- Meeren: The Papa Luna Castle and the old town of Peñiscola are the scenarios chosen for being the city of Meeren where Tyrion Lannister appears this season.
